Concrete Built on a Solid Base for South Jersey Winters
Most concrete problems start below the surface. A slab is only as steady as the ground under it, so we dig out soft soil, roots and loose fill, then compact a crushed-stone base that drains well and supports the concrete evenly. A weak or wet base is a common reason walks, patios and driveways settle, heave and crack.
Winter adds stress. Water in the concrete and the ground below it freezes, expands and thaws many times each season, which can flake the surface and push slabs out of line. Outdoor concrete here should be an air-entrained mix, whose tiny air bubbles give freezing water room to expand. Runoff can also wash soil out from under the edges of walks and patios, so pitch and drainage are part of every plan.
Local conditions play a part as well. Mature street trees in older towns like Audubon, Oaklyn and Westville can lift sidewalk slabs, and homes on low ground near Big Timber Creek may have a high water table that keeps the base wet.

Repair, Resurface or Replace?
Not every crack means a full tear-out. The right fix depends on whether the concrete is only worn on top or has actually moved, so we check for movement, drainage issues and root damage during your free estimate.
If only a few sections are damaged, replacing just those slabs can make sense. New concrete looks lighter than weathered concrete for a while, so some homeowners replace the whole walk or patio for a uniform look.

Should I seal my concrete, and how do I care for it in winter?
Sealing is worth it here, where water, salt and freeze-thaw cycles are hard on concrete. Once the concrete has cured, apply a quality sealer following the product directions and reseal every few years. During the first winter, skip rock salt and chemical deicers, and never use ammonium-based products. Sand adds traction without the damage, and a plastic shovel blade is gentler than metal.
Why does concrete crack, and can it be prevented?
All concrete shrinks slightly as it cures, and that can cause cracks. Control joints give those cracks a straight, planned place to form. Random cracks, sinking and heaving usually come from a weak base, poor drainage, tree roots or frost. A compacted base, the right mix, reinforcement where needed and good drainage reduce those risks, but no concrete is completely crack-proof.
